Valentine's Coloring for Gymnasts – A Fun & Powerful Tool for Sensory and Emotional Regulation

Valentine’s Day Is Full of Big Emotions—Let’s Support Your Child and Adaptive Athlete Holistically

When I was brainstorming Valentine’s Day activities for my clients and reflecting on what other therapists and gymnastics instructors have done in the past, I noticed something was missing—there weren’t many resources that focused on sensory or emotional regulation.

On a holiday filled with excitement, fluctuating emotions, and, let’s be honest, a whole lot of sugar, I wanted to create something that stayed true to what I teach: movement education, sensory regulation, and relational neuroscience. The children I work with experience big feelings and emotions, just like any other athlete or child, and having tools to support their regulation, focus, and transitions is essential—not only for their success in the gym but also in their daily lives.

That’s why I created a set of Gymnastics-Themed Coloring Sheets specifically designed to support sensory and emotional regulation. These aren’t just ordinary coloring pages! Each sheet includes:
Educational content on the back to help parents and coaches understand the importance of regulation.
An activity that can be done with a class, teammates, or even at home with siblings or friends.
Flexible modifications to fit different needs—whether in a gymnastics gym, classroom, or home setting.

Why Coloring Is More Than Just an Art Activity

Coloring might seem like a simple pastime, but for children, athletes, and even adults, it can be a powerful tool for emotional regulation, fine motor development, and focus. Whether your child needs help calming down, transitioning between activities, or developing hand strength for gymnastics skills, coloring provides a structured, soothing activity that supports both body and mind.

🧘 Regulation & Emotional Control

  • Coloring calms the nervous system, making it a great pre-activity or cool-down tool.

  • Provides structured hand movement, helping children transition from high-energy play to focused learning.

  • Helps reduce anxiety, frustration, or sensory overload, making it easier for children to engage and participate in activities.

✋ Fine Motor Strength & Coordination

  • Holding crayons or colored pencils strengthens grip and hand muscles, essential for holding bars, rings, and beams.

  • Supports hand-eye coordination, which is crucial for body control in gymnastics, tumbling, and play.

  • Helps develop bilateral coordination and spatial awareness, both necessary for navigating movement challenges.

🎯 Focus & Attention

  • Encourages sustained focus and patience, which helps children learn to stay engaged in an activity.

  • Strengthens visual tracking skills, important for sports like trampoline, vault, and tumbling.

  • Promotes self-directed play and independence, supporting confidence-building in both sports and daily routines.

💙 Sensory Processing & Emotional Expression

  • Provides a nonverbal way to express emotions, especially for children who may struggle with verbal communication.

  • The repetitive motion of coloring can be soothing and grounding, making it a great tool for neurodivergent children.

  • Using different textures (crayons, markers, or watercolor pencils) provides tactile feedback to support sensory needs.

Breathwork & Affirmations: Additional Tools for Regulation

Coloring isn’t the only regulation tool included in this Gymnastics Coloring Packetbreathing exercises and affirmations are also powerful ways to help children stay calm, confident, and in control of their emotions.

🌬 The Power of Breathwork

Breathing exercises help children regulate their energy levels, focus, and manage stress. Just like learning a gymnastics skill, breathwork must be practiced regularly so that when challenges arise, the body already knows what to do.

Try these simple breathing techniques with your child:

🟠 Rainbow Breathing – Inhale as you “trace” a rainbow in the air, exhale as you complete the arc. Repeat with different colors.
🔵 Flower-Petal Breathing – Inhale deeply while spreading fingers open like petals, exhale while closing them.
🟣 Pinwheel Breathing – Inhale through the nose, then exhale slowly as if blowing on a pinwheel.

Practicing these techniques regularly helps children reset, refocus, and manage their emotions in any situation—whether at practice, school, or home.

Affirmations for Confidence & Focus

Gymnastics (and life!) requires just as much mental strength as physical ability. Practicing affirmations can help children build confidence, reframe fear and frustration, and develop a strong, positive mindset.

Try these affirmations with your child:

💪 Strength & Confidence – “I am strong, powerful, and capable.”
🌟 Growth Mindset – “Progress is progress, no matter how small.”
💖 Resilience & Determination – “I can do hard things.”
🎯 Focus & Calm – “I take a deep breath and trust myself.”

💌 TRY THIS! 💌
Ask your child: “I feel strongest when I tell myself __________.”
This simple reflection can help them internalize positive self-talk and self-belief.

How to Use These Coloring Sheets in Your Daily Routine

🏡 At Home: Use them as a calming transition between activities, a bedtime wind-down, or a fun weekend activity.
🏫 At School: Modify the activities to fit classroom settings or share them with friends.
🤸‍♂️ At Gymnastics Practice: Try using them before warm-up, during breaks, or as a cool-down to help children prepare and regulate before or after movement.

🌟 No matter where you use them, these coloring sheets are a simple, fun, and effective way to help children develop emotional regulation skills that will support them for life.

Hello, I'm Dr. Sigourney Weathers. With a Doctorate in Physical Therapy and a passion for gymnastics, trampoline, and community, I'm here to shake up the traditional approach to pediatric physical therapy and wellness. With over 30 years of experience in the gymnastics community, including 15+ years as a coach and judge, and 10+ years specializing in inclusive and adaptive gymnastics, I bring a wealth of expertise to my practice. Our goal is to provide a space where individuals of all abilities can thrive and continue their lifelong health and wellness journey.
